Kingston Primary School

YEAR 3

In Lower Key Stage 2 at Kingston,  children continue to experience a varied curriculum. There is a thematic topic-based approach and links are made between different subjects to help children to put their learning into context. Where possible, links are made with real life experiences that our pupils can relate to.

Reading and Homework

Weekly homework is set in Maths and English and our pupils are expected to read five times a week as part of our ‘Kingston Rainbow Reading Scheme’.  Spelling activities are also sent home for homework.

Thematic Curriculum

We choose exciting and vibrant themes as a vehicle to teach our 'Take on the World' curriculum..  Recent themes have included Fantastic Beasts and the Egyptians.  We enrich our curriculum provision with lots of educational trips and visits linked to our theme.   Children gain knowledge about the different subjects and learn important skills in Science, History, Geography, Computing, Art & Design and Design Technology.  Other taught subjects include Music, PSHE, French, Religion and world views and P.E. Children have P.E. lessons twice each week.

We teach maths through the White Rose Maths methods.  This method incorporates established research into a highly effective teaching approach. With its emphasis on teaching pupils to solve problems,  We use the White Rose Maths scheme of work with an emphasis on learning maths through using concrete materials, then progressing to pictorial representations of problems and finally moving onto abstract representations.  By spending time with concrete materials, pupils develop a more solid understanding of key concepts.

Children’s progress is assessed throughout the year through observations of how they approach their work in different subjects, through pupils' learning conversations with teachers and through their written work.  Pupils’ writing levels are assessed regularly using our Kingston banding sheets.  There are formal assessment weeks three times throughout the year which, combined with teachers’ ongoing assessments,  give an indication of where your child is in line with the national average. Teachers use the information from the assessments to set targets and plan work to ensure that each child continues to make progress.
